NEWS ARCHIVE FOR 2007:
NEWS UPDATE: 12/26BELATED MERRY CHRISTMAS!
Posted at 10:00 PM by gormuu
It's been a bit slow around the website the last week due to Christmas-related comings and goings and the fact that a dad-blamed tree fell on the roof of my house. No, my Masterworks collection was nowhere near the damage, but it's been a real drain on my time and, inevitably, my wallet! And there have been a few frayed nerves as well! But I'll be posting more updates as we roll into the New Year and 2008 shapes up to be an even wilder realm of reprints than the last couple have been!
THE FUTURE OF THE DC HARDCOVERS: ARCHIVES/DELUXE/OMNIBUS
Posted at 10:00 PM by gormuu
Linked HERE is an article by Douglas Wolk at Publisher's Weekly that explores the future of DC's hardcover initiatives, including the newly-coined DC Deluxe Edition and DC Omnibus. An ominouse note in the article for fans of DC's Archives confirms rumors that have been hanging over the series for almost a year now: the Archives "may soon be ending", according to the article. Though as DC Vice President Georg Brewer notes, it may be ending "in its current form". For more detail, read the article.
And for some very in-depth discussion that runs the gamut on feeling from Archives fans, check out THIS DISCUSSION at the DC Forum.

SPIRIT ARCHIVES VOL. 24: HELP NEEDED
Posted at 12:00 PM by gormuu
Spirit Archives editor Scott Nybakken is in need of color reference for a single strip that is to be reprinted in the upcoming Spirit Archives Vol. 24 HC. The strip in question is the 8/31/52 feature titled "The Last Man on the Planet Moon". Scott has been beating the bushes to turn up a scan of this page, but none of his sources have been able to come through, so he's hoping that someone within earshot of this news bulletin can help out. If you have this particular strip and can make a scan of it, please send me an email and I'll put you in touch with Scott. If you know someone you think can help, contact them and let them know about this. The sooner Scott gets his hands on this strip, the better. The rest of the book is done after receiving the top-notch restoration Spirit fans have expected; getting this strip set up is just the last ornery detail.
Please feel free to spread the word at other message board forums! I hope this can come together quickly. I know as the Spirit Archives line comes to a close we don't want to see any books delayed. And speaking of the line coming to a close, check out the following news update!
WINDING DOWN THE SPIRIT ARCHIVES LINE
Posted at 12:00 PM by gormuu
While talking with Scott about Spirit Archives Vol. 24, he suggested I pass on the following information which ought to help end speculation about how the Spirit line will resolve itself: There are going to be 26 volumes in the series total! Vol. 25 will include all the dailies in black and white, and Vol. 26 will include everything Eisner himself drew with the character after 1952. (This will not include the New Adventures that Kitchen Sink published.)
Remember way back when Vol. 1 was announced? With the line about to finish up in the form of such a comprehensive library, this 26-volume set will really stand as a pinnacle achievement in comic reprint history.

All three back to press Omniboo hit today, a week after their initial release date: Fantastic Four Omnibus Vol. 1 HC, Uncanny X-Men Omnibus Vol. 1 HC and Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 1 HC. BACK TO PRESS OMNIBOO SHIPPING LATE
Posted at 1:20 PM by gormuu
There's no reason given by Diamond why the three BTP Omniboo (FF Vol. 1, Uncanny X-Men Vol. 1 and Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 1) didn't hit their target ship date of 11/7, but apparently they will ship late. The three volumes are done and ready to go, so it's probably just a warehouse snafu. Check in tomorrow to see if they are on next week's shipping list.

RIP: PAUL NORRIS (1914-2007)
Posted at 11:20 AM by gormuu
Aquaman creator Paul Norris has passed away. From DC:
"Artist Paul Norris, best known as the co-creator of Aquaman, has died at age 93.
'Paul Norris was one of the quiet, dedicated artists who sustained comics through the decades,' says Paul Levitz, DC Comics President & Publisher. 'His most important contribution to DC was long before I was born, but it was my pleasure to reconnect him to DC and Aquaman.'
Born in 1914, Norris worked as a cartoonist for the Dayton Daily News before beginning his career in comic books in 1940, when he started freelancing for Prize Publications on features including Yank and Doodle and Futureman. Norris moved to DC Comics in 1941, where he introduced Aquaman in MORE FUN COMICS #73. After his stay on the Aquaman feature ended, he moved on to other features including The Sandman and Johnny Quick.
After serving in the Army, Norris joined King Features, where he contributed to comic strips including Flash Gordon, Secret Agent X-9 and Jungle Jim. He took over writing and drawing the Brick Bradford strip in 1952 and continued drawing it through 1987, establishing a reputation for never missing a deadline. In the 1960s and 70s, Norris also drew comics for Western Publishing including Tarzan of the Apes and Magnus, Robot Fighter."
To discuss Norris and his legendary creation, check out THIS THREAD at the DC Forum.

SHIPPING NEXT WEEK FROM TALES OF WONDER

Batman Archives Vol. 7 HC Reprints Detective #136-154 (June 1948-December 1949)
|
Here's the list of books you might be interested in that begin shipping next week from Tales of Wonder, on Wednesday, November 6.
Batman Archives Vol. 7 is this week's top release. It will reprint Batman and Robin stories from Detective #136-154, nineteen tales from the decade's end, culminating with the very last issue cover dated December 1949. Next stop...the '50s?
The rest of DC's offerings include three trade paperback collections of current material: borrowing the title of a classic Pete Townshend song lyric, Robin: Teenage Wasteland TPB collects Robin #154-162; Dave Gibbons' highly-regarded take on the Green Lantern Corps sees its second trade collection in Green Lantern Corps: A Darker Shade of Green TPB, which collects GLC #7-13; and Green Arrow: Road to Jericho TPB continues the Oliver Queen library by collecting issues #66-75 by Judd Winick, Scott McDaniel and Andy Owens.
From Marvel, it's Stephen King all the way, as the momentous success of his Dark Tower: The Gunslinger Born hits store shelves in hardcover. Stephen King's Dark Tower: The Gunslinger Born HC is a Marvel Premiere Edition HC that reprints the seven issue lmited series by Peter David, Robin Furth, Jae Lee and Richard Isanove. The tale adapts the fourth novel of King's Dark Tower series of novels, Wizard and Glass, and acts as a precursor to next year's continuation of the Dark Tower saga with all new stories inspired by King. Marvel is preparing an all-out advertising blitz for this book, and it ought to be interesting to see how the marketplace reacts to it. The monthly comic has done excellent business in the direct market - now it's time to see how well this hardcover collection will burn up the charts. No doubt it will perform well, particularly on initial release....but how well?
Marvel also offers up two more hardcovers, these in the oversized hardcover format: Ultimate Fantastic Four Vol. 4 HC follows hot on the heels of Vol. 3 (which came out only a few short months ago). This is a pretty hefty book that reprints Ultimate FF #33-41, Annual #2, Ultimate Fantastic Four/X-Men and Ultimate X-Men/Fantastic Four. Lots of artistic contributors to this one, including Mike Carey, Pasqual Ferry, Scott Kolins, Mark Brooks, Stuart Immonen and Leinil Yu. And finally, Peter Parker, Spider-Man: Back in Black HC follows up on last month's Back in Black HC, reprinting the rest of the Back in Black event, including Sensational Spider-Man #35-40 and Annual #1, Spider-Man Family #1-2, the Back in Black Handbook, and the Marvel Spotlight: Back in Black issue.
Here's the list of highlights from TOW's list of books:
• 30 Days of Night: Eben & Stella TPB
• Batman Archives Vol. 7 HC
• Cairo HC
• Dark Tower: The Gunslinger Born MPE HC
• Green Arrow: Road to Jericho TPB
• Green Lantern Corps: A Darker Shade of Green TPB
• Marvel Legacy: 1960s to 1990s Handbook TPB
• New Avengers Vol. 6: Revolution TPB
• Omega Flight: Alpha to Omega TPB
• Robin: Teenage Wasteland TPB
• Spider-Man, Peter Parker: Back in Black HC
• Ultimate Fantastic Four Vol. 4 HC
ART BOOKS SHIPPING NEXT WEEK: MIKE GOLDEN/MATT WAGNER'S GRENDEL
Posted at 11:30 AM by gormuu
Tales of Wonder is delivering two new art books that are due next week that might be of interest to comic readers who were around in the '80s:
• Excess: The Art of Michael Golden HC
• The Art of Matt Wagner's Grendel HC
Michael Golden's influence is a pervasive one, especially among current comic artists - he also happens to have drawn one of my favorite comics of all time in Avengers Annual #10, and one of my favorite series in Micronauts! And Grendel was one of the '80s indie comics success stories and is currently being reprinted by Dark Horse.

Atlas Era Strange Tales Masterworks Vol. 1 Reprints Strange Tales #1-10
|
Here's the list of books you might be interested in that begin shipping next week from Tales of Wonder, on Wednesday, October 31.
Candy won't be the only thing to load up on this Halloween. Take a look at this list of book releases!
This week sees two, count 'em two new Masterworks releases! First to mention is Fantastic Four Masterworks Vol. 6, the back to press (BTP) edition that reprints FF #51-60 and Annual #4 by Stan and Jack. This Masterworks volume features the newly restored artwork from the Fantastic Four Omnibus Vol. 2, and features the first appearance of Black Panther, the titanic struggle between Silver Surfer and Doctor Doom, the return of the Inhumans and perhaps the most beloved FF story of all time, "This Man, This Monster!" The other Masterworks selection is meant to scare the bejeesus out of you! Atlas Era Strange Tales Vol. 1 collects the first ten issues of the early '50s horror anthology. This is Atlas's attempt to deliver horror in the pre-Kefauver Commission era, with talents like Stan Lee, Gene Colan, Russ Heath, Bill Everett, Bernie Krigstein and more offering up terror and scares in brief, blistering five-page stories. (Don't forget to check out the PREVIEW PAGE set up for Strange Tales Vol. 1, with tons of images from the inside of the book!)
Marvel caps off its Halloween programming with Essential Werewolf by Night Vol. 2, which completes the compiling of the bad-luck fate of Jack Russell as the accursed Werewolf. It reprints Werewolf by Night #21-43, Giant-Size Werewolf #2-5 and Marvel Premiere #28.
Finally, from Marvel, of note is the Wolverine: Evolution MPE HC, which reprints Wolverine #50-55 by Jeph Loeb and Simone Bianchi. This is available in both a regular edition MPE HC and a "Black and White" edition, which has all the color subtracted leaving just the pencil and inks.
Want more scary stuff? 30 Days of Night has been playing big at the box office, and with this comprehensive volume by IDW you can catch up on all three parts of the trilogy. The Complete 30 Days of Night Trilogy HC is a deluxe hardcover that comes signed and numbered by creators Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith. Something tells me this one might not last long. And for more Steve Niles, check out DC's Creeper: Welcome to Creepville TPB, which reprints the six-issue limited series by Niles featuring Steve Ditko's crazy, cackling, super-heroic oddity.
Also from DC comes a key Flash title, Flash: Wonderland TPB, which reprints Geoff Johns' first story arc in Flash #164-169. And Showcase Presents Teen Titans Vol. 2, part of DC's sudden reshuffling of the Showcase deck, bows next week. It collects Teen Titans #19-36, Brave and the Bold #83 and 94 and World's Finest #205.
Two books from Dark Horse deserve mentioning: Nexus Archives Vol. 6 HC collects Steve Rude's masterwork, this edition reprinting Nexus Vol. 2 #33-39, originally published by First Comics in 1987. It's nice to see this series going this far, and if you're a Steve Rude/Nexus fan, it deserves your support so it can go the distance in the Dark Horse Archives series.
Finally, one of the biggest comic events of the year is compiled in Dark Horse's Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Long Way Home TPB, which collects the first five issues of Joss Whedon's return to the Buffy-verse. With art by Georges Jeanty, this series is Whedon's version of Season Eight of Buffy - no small deal!
Here's the list of highlights from TOW's list of books:
• 52: The Covers HC
• Annihilation Book 2 TPB
• Beowulf Script Book SC
• Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Long Way Home TPB
• Complete 30 Days of Night Trilogy HC

There are a ton of great books shipping next week, so let's get started!
First up, Marvel delivers one of the most eagerly-awaited Masterworks of the year with Nick Fury, Agent of SHIELD Masterworks Vol. 1. Sure, it's almost a month late (see previous News Update), but by next Wednesday all that will be forgotten when you're facing front and backing SHIELD! This book includes the first year and a half worth of Strange Tales stories featuring the master spy Nick Fury, plus it also includes his very first appearance in the modern Marvel Universe in a newly restored Fantastic Four #21. You'll get some prime Lee and Kirby action, with a dose of Steranko bringing up the rear.
Avengers fans have to be excited as the Avengers Assemble HC series rolls on. Avengers Assemble Vol. 5 HC gathers together Avengers #41-56, which was previously compiled in the very rare Kang Dynasty TPB. This oversized HC also includes Avengers Annual 2001 and will complete the reprinting of the Kurt Busiek era of Avengers.
Since it's October, it's Halloween programming time at Marvel. Next week sees a couple Zombie related releases, with Marvel Zombies Covers HC an oversized collection of Arthur Suydam covers and commentary from the Zombies series, plus other assorted Zombies covers by Greg Land and Kyle Hotz. Also check out Marvel Spotlight: Marvel Zombies, which includes interviews with Robert Kirkman, Sean Phillips, Arthur Suydam and more. Finally, another oversized hardcover is Legion of Monsters, which collects a handful of monster one-shots from earlier this year, including Werewolf By Night, Man-Thing, Morbious, and Satana.
Another Marvel comic is reprinted in collected edition next week - but not by Marvel! Chronicles of Conan Vol. 13: Whispering Shadows TPB by Dark Horse (who currently holds the license of Conan) will reprint Conan the Barbarian #92 and #101-108 by Roy Thomas and John Buscema.
A notable DC release is The Spirit Vol. 1 HC, which collects the first six issues of Darwyn Cooke's take on Will Eisner's classic series.

Avengers Masterworks Vol. 7 Reprints Avengers #59-68 and Marvel Super-Heroes #17
|
Here's the list of books you might be interested in that began shipping this week from Tales of Wonder, on Wednesday, October 17.
DC leads with a very interesting Archives volume this week with JSA All-Star Archives Vol. 1, which compiles the original appearances of Johnny Thunder, Hour-Man, Atom, Dr. Mid-Nite, Mr. Terrific, Wildcat and Red Tornado in a single volume. Culling stories from Flash Comics, Adventure Comics, All-American Comics and Sensation Comics that span the years 1940-1942, this is a new "anthology" approach for Archives to collect these rare stories. This Archives edition is list priced at $59.99.
DC also offers up a nice stackful of varied books: Bone creator Jeff Smith was let loose on Billy Batson and the Shazam mythos and the resulting four-issue mini-series has now been collected in Shazam! The Monster Society of Evil HC. Also, this particular Showcase volume might have slipped through your comic-detecting radar systems due to DC's wholesale shuffling of their Showcase release schedule, but this week also saw the release of Showcase Presents World's Finest Vol. 1, which collects Superman #76 - the first meeting between Superman and Batman - and World's Finest #71-111 in a 552-page black and white paperback.
Marvel offers up a new Masterworks this week, with Avengers Masterworks Vol. 7 reprinting Avengers #59-68 and Marvel Super-Heroes #17, which features a solo story starring the Black Knight! And in the digest format, Spider-Girl Vol. 9: Secret Lives Digest brings us to the 50th issue reprinted in the line, as it collects Spider-Girl #45-50 by Tom DeFalco and Pat Olliffe.

Posted at 1:20 PM by gormuu
An inevitability with the movie coming out, this is nonetheless cool news. I've been provided with some preview images for the first Iron Man Omnibus which can be seen at the following page:
IRON MAN OMNIBUS VOL. 1 PREVIEW
This book will be in January solicits, advance solicited for April release.
Like the Spider-Man and Silver Surfer Omnibus, the Iron Man Omnibus will be fully restored. As part of his summer trip to the Marvel film warehouse, Cory unearthed complete photostats for TOS #50, the issue previously thought lost and which was reconstructed by Don Heck for the original Masterworks. (As if Cory's folk hero status could be any higher!)
The book is being printed in China, requiring advance solicitation due to the added shipping time for overseas printing. On the plus side, The Iron Man Omnibus will have sewn binding.
The book will feature three covers: a regular cover, a painted variant by Adi Granov, and a movie-related cover. Mockups of the painted variant and the movie cover will be posted when they are completed.

DC: "DC COMICS RESTORES HUNGER DOGS ART IN JACK KIRBY'S FOURTH WORLD OMNIBUS VOL. 4 HC"
Posted at 6:00 PM by gormuu
From DC:
March, 2008, will see the release of JACK KIRBY'S FOURTH WORLD OMNIBUS VOL. 4, the final hardcover collection in this highly acclaimed series. Highlighting this volume will be THE HUNGER DOGS, with 24 pages of art restored to the original inks by Mike Royer.
"We are excited to share with readers Kirby's original vision for the epic's end in Vol. 4 of the FOURTH WORLD OMNIBUS series," says Georg Brewer, VP - Design and DC Direct Creative. "This collection features 24 pages at the size that Kirby penciled them, the way they looked before being altered to fit the larger trim size of the HUNGER DOGS graphic novel. Faithfully inked by Mike Royer, these pages are incorporated within the HUNGER DOGS story, which is completely re-colored with a sensibility consistent with the previous OMNIBUS hard covers. Along with the Fourth World character entries he drew for WHO'S WHO: THE DEFINITIVE DIRECTORY OF THE DC UNIVERSE, these exciting, rarely seen aspects of Kirby's work and this important story make this a must-have for every serious comics collector."
In addition to THE HUNGER DOGS and art from WHO'S WHO, the JACK KIRBY'S FOURTH WORLD OMNIBUS VOL. 4 HC will collect MISTER MIRACLE #10-18, FOREVER PEOPLE #11, NEW GODS #11 and the 48-page story "Even Gods Must Die," originally published in 1984's NEW GODS #6.

NEWS UPDATE: 9/26SCOTT MCCLOUD'S ZOT! GETS COLLECTED
Posted at 7:00 PM by gormuu
Understanding Comics author Scott McCloud will see the complete run of his series Zot! collected in trade. Per a story linked from NEWSARAMA, the following news from Publisher's Weekly:
"Hope Innelli, associate publisher of Harper Paperbacks, said the new 576-page edition of Zot! will collect the entire black & white series in one volume. While early issues of the series, which was originally published by Eclipse Comics, ran in color, the new edition will include only the black & white material. 'That's a creative decision by Scott,' said Innelli, explaining that McCloud believes the series really came together when he focused on working in black and white.
The new edition will have a trim size of 6"x9" with French flaps and will be priced at $22.95. The book will include extensive commentary by McCloud on its creation, as well as much never-before-seen material. The book will also include 'the Earth Stories,' the last nine stories in the series, which have never been reprinted. 'Zot! is the origin of Scott's comics,' said Innelli. 'It's where he defined his style. We're so used to Scott explaining comics, but now we get a chance to experience his comics.'"
The PW article further states that the book will receive a big marketing rollout that will begin at the 2008 San Diego Comic-Con, so that is likely when the book will first see release.
HELLBOY LIBRARY HCS ON THE WAY!
Posted at 7:00 PM by gormuu
News from the "better late than never" department - from NEWSARAMA:
"....in spring of 2008, Dark Horse will begin releasing Mike Mignola's Hellboy in hardcover, "Library Editions" similar to the treatment it has given Frank Miller's Sin City. Each hardcover will collect two trades which will be collected in chronological order. All of the current trades are slated to be collected in this format."
For those unfamiliar with Frank Miller's Sin City Library HC editions, they are big, honking, Absolute-Edition style HCs delivered in a slipcase. In a later email letter from Dark Horse, the project was further discussed:
"Hey Hellboy fans! You can now own an exclusive, hardcover collection of the comics that spawned the whole Hellboy universe--the big bang, so to speak--complete with previously unreleased sketches and designs! The Hellboy Library Editions are handsomely bound to match The Art of Hellboy, and each volume contains two full story-arcs. Hellboy Volume 1 will be available April 2008, and will kick off the collection in style with Seed of Destruction and Wake The Devil."

SHIPPING THIS WEEK FROM TALES OF WONDER
Posted at 10:30 AM by gormuu
Here's the list of books you might be interested in that begin shipping this week from Tales of Wonder, on Wednesday, September 26.
Just because we're all sad about the Nick Fury Masterworks delay doesn't mean we have to change our lifestyles. If we did that, Hydra would win! So let's set out sights on the slate of books coming out this week, from which there's more than enough good stuff to get excited about. FOR INSTANCE....Avengers/Defenders War MPE HC, which collects Avengers #115-118 and Defenders #8-11, a reprint of that most famous first Marvel crossover epic. According to Marvel, this story is being newly restored, and it will be printed in the Marvel Premiere Edition classic format, which means it will be available in both regular edition and part of the numbered MPE Classic library. (This will be Vol. 6 in the library.)
Also from Marvel comes Ghost Rider: Trail of Tears MPE HC, which collects the six-issue limited series by Garth Ennis and Clayton Crain. Allow me to gush about Crain's gorgeous and lush digital art: this story starring the Western Ghost Rider, set during the Civil War (the real one, not the Marvel one!), is as beautiful as it is horrifying. This one gets a high recommendation from me!
From DC, Showcase Presents Metal Men Vol. 1 takes its bow, reprinting Showcase #37-40, Metal Men #1-16 and Brave and the Bold #55. The Metal Men seemed to do very well with their first Archives volume, so it will be interesting to see how the Showcase book compares.
Here's the list of highlights from TOW's list of books:
• Alan Moore on His Work and Career HC
• Alan Moore's Yuggoth Cultures TPB
• Avengers/Defenders War MPE HC *regular*
• MPE Classic Vol. 6: Avengers/Defenders War MPE HC *variant*
• Batman: Black and White Vol. 1 TPB *new edition*
• Daredevil: Hell to Pay Vol. 1 TPB
• Friday the 13th TPB
• Ghost Rider: Trail of Tears MPE HC
• Iron Man: Hypervelocity TPB
• Marvel Spotlight: Thor
• Modern Masters in the Studio with Michael Golden DVD
• Punisher Presents Barracuda MAX TPB
• Sandman Mystery Theatre: Sleep of Reason TPB
• Showcase Presents Metal Men Vol. 1 TPB
• Teen Titans Vol. 7: Titans East TPB
• Walking Dead Vol. 7: The Calm Before TPB
ANOTHER MASTERWORKS DELAY: FF VOL. 5 VARIANT EDITION
Posted at 10:30 AM by gormuu
Though the regular edition hit stores on schedule last week, due to a printer's delay of some sort, the variant edition of Fantastic Four Masterworks Vol. 5 will be bumped to 10/3. (This is the BTP edition of Vol. 25 of the original Masterworks series.)
NEWS UPDATE: 9/23NICK FURY, AGENT OF SHIELD MASTERWORKS DELAYED
Posted at 7:40 PM by gormuu
As first mentioned in THIS THREAD, Nick Fury Masterworks Vol. 1, perhaps the most eagerly awaited new Masterworks volume in a long time, will be delayed 3-4 weeks. Editor Cory Sedlmeier states in the thread:
"There was a printing mistake that required portions of the book to be to reprinted. Unfortunately, the delay is going to be three to four weeks.
While a delay is the last thing we'd like to have, we feel it's more important that such a long-awaited book meet the high standard the Masterworks strive for, than to release the book on its original-schedule date given the printing issues associated with it. Sometimes you've gotta yield to back a quality SHIELD Masterworks."
As the thread title indicates, feel free to blame Hydra.

Fantastic Four Masterworks Vol. 5 Back to Press Edition Reprints Fantastic Four #41-50 and Annual #3
|
Here's the list of books you might be interested in that begin shipping next week from Tales of Wonder, on Wednesday, September 19.
Marvel leads the week with the first back to press (BTP) editions of out of print Masterworks from the "Cory Era", the new line of Masterworks ushered in during early 2003 and which has continues unabated since then. So far, the Masterworks program seems to have been quite the success, with over a dozen books selling out in very short order. One of those books, Fantastic Four Masterworks Vol. 5, is due for reprinting next week. As previously reported, this edition - which collects the first appearance of the Inhumans, the wedding of Reed and Sue, and the coming of Galactus and the Silver Surfer - will sport newly remastered art from the FF Vol. 2 Omnibus. It will be available in both regular and variant editions.
Also from Marvel is the Captain America by Ed Brubaker Vol. 1 Omnibus HC, a massive edition which will reprint Ed Brubaker, Steve Epting and Mike Perkins Cap run from the first issue all the way through #25, the Death of a Dream issue. It will also include the 65th Anniversary Special and Winter-Soldier: Winter Kills one-shot, which gets my vote for comic of the year.
DC issues the third collection of 52, their very successful weekly crossover event, and Green Arrow/Black Canary: For Better or Worse TPB, a collection which looks like a lot of fun as it compiles some of the greatest team-ups between the two heroes. It spans eras from Denny O'Neil to Brad Meltzer, with some Alan Moore and Mike Grell thrown in for good measure! Alex Ross provides the collection cover.
Also of note is Justice Society of America Vol. 1: The Next Age HC, one of the biggest events of the year in comics. It collects the first four issues of the series by Geoff Johns and features a cover by, yep! Alex Ross!
Here's the list of highlights from TOW's list of books:
• 52 Vol. 3 TPB
• Captain America by Ed Brubaker Omnibus Vol. 1 HC
• Criminal Macabre: Two Red Eyes TPB
• Dr. Thirteen: Architecture and Morality TPB
• Green Arrow/Black Canary: For Better or Worse TPB
• Hellblazer: The Gift TPB
• Justice Society of America Vol. 1: The Next Age HC

• MM Vol. 25: Fantastic Four *BTP*
• Fantastic Four Masterworks Vol. 5 *BTP*
• Silent War TPB
• Spawn Collection Vol. 4 TPB

NEWS UPDATE: 8/19DC SHIPPING CHANGES/BLACK DOSSIER UPDATE
Posted at 1:00 PM by gormuu
Two books due to ship 8/22 have been pushed back a week to 8/29: Manhunter Vol. 3: Origins TPB and Ninja Scroll TPB.
Also, a release date for League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: The Black Dossier HC has been unceremoniously inserted into DC's list of shipping changes. For now, Alan Moore and LOEG fans can look forward to 11/14 as the (tentative) date on which this coveted HC will finally see print. Another unusual facet to this books release: it will be PUBLISHED IN THE US ONLY, probably an issue relating to Moore's use of recognizable archetypes that may make certain rights holders a little cranky!
BOOKS OF NOTE: TELLOS COLOSSAL HC/ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN 100 PROJECT TPB
Posted at 1:00 PM by gormuu
Before we jump into an inordinately large list of books shipping next week, which include lots of big releases from multiple publishers, I'd like to make note of two books which shouldn't be lost in the shuffle. First up is Tellos Colossal HC, a 288-page oversized HC that reprints all ten issues of the original series by Todd Dezago and the late Mike Wieringo. It also includes stories from the Tellos Prelude and Tellos Prologue specials plus Section Zero #1, so it's a complete picture of the creator-owned project that 'Ringo was most passionate about, above and beyond everything else he was working on in comics.
Also, in tandem with Marvel, the Hero Initiative collects all 100 commissioned covers done for Ultimate Spider-Man #100 in The Ultimate Spider-Man 100 Project TPB. Reprinting covers by the likes of John Romita Sr. and Jr., Adam and Andy Kubert, Mark Bagley, J. Scott Campbell, Todd McFarlane, George Perez, and many more artists, this TPB will raise money for the Hero Initiative charity which takes donated funds and matches them with comic creators who may have hit hard times and are in financial need. For more details about the Hero Initiative, check out THEIR WEBSITE and consider buying this collection, which features art and commentary from the biggest and most talented comic artists of today; there is also an introduction by Stan Lee and I can see that the cover copy of the book notes a contribution from Neil Gaiman. There is to be only one printing of this book.

Amazing Fantasy Omnibus HC Amazing Adventures #1-6, Amazing Adult Fantasy #7-14 and Amazing Fantasy #15
|
Here's the list of books you might be interested in that begin shipping next week from Tales of Wonder, on Wednesday, August 22.
Marvel leads the way with two classic hardcovers; one Masterworks and one Omnibus. First, another GA Masterworks comes our way with Golden Age Sub-Mariner Masterworks Vol. 2, which holds the distinction of being the first of Timely's Big 3 to get a followup MM edition. This volume reprints the contents of Sub-Mariner Comics #5-8 in their entirety. Also, a 416 page single volume reprint of one of the most under-the-radar books, despite it giving birth to one of comics most iconic heroes, of Marvel's Silver Age: Amazing Fantasy Omnibus HC reprints all fifteen issues of the book that evolved from B-movie monster mag to Ditko strange suspense to Spider-Man showcase! If you need to bone up on Amazing Fantasy, check out this website's comprehensive FEATURE PAGE, which includes contents listings, preview images, and the luscious new Dan Brereton painted variant cover homage to Tim Boo Baa!
More classic Marvel comics can be found in the long-awaited Thor Visionaries: Walter Simonson Vol. 4 TPB. What's it been, four years since the last volume? Well, that patience will be rewarded this Wednesday as Valhalla finds favor with Thor #371-374 and Balder the Brave #1-4, compiles them in a full-color classic trade and deems them "visionary". (I don't think Thor fans will disagree!) For those keeping count, there's one more TPB necessary to bring the entire Simonson under wraps.
Strip fans have been excited since it was announced that Milton Caniff's seminal Terry and the Pirates was going to be reprinted by IDW in hardcover. After a several week delay, Complete Terry and the Pirates Vol. 1 HC hits store shelves this Wednesday. Fans of the collaboration between Keith Giffen and J. Marc DeMatteis (Justice League International/Defenders) will want to take a look at Boom Studios new collection Planetary Brigade Vol. 1 TPB.
DC's next installment in their Showcase Presents line of black and white phonebooks is Showcase Presents Wonder Woman Vol. 1, which finds its starting point with Wonder Woman #98 and reprints through issue 117.
Here's the list of highlights from TOW's list of books:
• Amazing Fantasy Omnibus HC *regular edition*
• Amazing Fantasy Omnibus HC *Brereton variant*
• Buffy the Vampire Slayer Omnibus Vol. 2 TPB
• Complete Terry and the Pirates Vol. 1: 1934-1936 HC
• Freshmen Vol. 2: Fundamentals of Fear TPB

• X-23: Target TPB
NEWS UPDATE: 8/13RIP: MIKE WIERINGO

RIP: MIKE WIERINGO June 24, 1963 - August 12, 2007
|
Shocking and sad news to report today: Comic artist Mike Wieringo has died of a heart attack at the young age of 44. Details can be found at NEWSARAMA and CBR.
Please pay a visit to THIS THREAD where discussion is underway about Mike's passing. I'd love it if people could share their thoughts about his art and maybe throw up a scan of your favorite page or something. Mike is one of my absolute favorite artists; after reading his majestic run teamed up with Mark Waid on Fantastic Four, I would buy anything with his name on it. NEWS UPDATE: 7/29SDCC: NEIL YOUNG'S GREENDALE HEADED FOR VERTIGO OGN
Posted at 10:00 AM by gormuu
Per NEWSARAMA comes word on an upcoming graphic novel by Joshua Dyson inspired by Neil Young's 2003 concept album Greendale.
This is one wacky album (but then again, that describes most of Neil's records), so it'll be interesting to see how Dyson turns it into a story.
NEWS UPDATE: 7/28SDCC: NEWS FROM IMAGE: GIRLS/MONKEYMAN & O'BRIEN
Posted at 1:10 PM by gormuu
Per NEWSARAMA, a few tidbits about upcoming collected editions:
"Larsen informed the crowd that the entire run of the Luna brothers series Girls will soon be published all in one volume.....
Larsen wrapped up the panel by saying the complete Monkeyman & O'Brien will be reprinted in one of those aforementioned "gigantic, mind-numbingly big" volumes."
Also, this sounds intriguing:
"The publisher then plugged the previously announced anthology The Next Issue Project, where creators (including Mike Allred, Kyle Baker, Howard Chaykin) make a short story that serves as the "next issue" for old public domain comics."

It's a very light week for collected editions, with not too many high-profile books coming out. Arguably the coolest book is Image's Godland Celestial Edition HC, a 360-page hardcover compendium of Joe Casey and Tom Scioli's Kirby-laced extravaganza Godland. It reprints the first 12 issues plus extras. Oni issues a new edition of Greg Rucka and Steve Lieber's Whiteout Vol. 1 Definitive Edition TPB in a "remastered and reformatted" edition.

"In 1988, writer Jamie Delano launched a series called "Hellblazer," about the character John Constantine, created by Alan Moore during the latter's run on "Swamp Thing." SDCC: REPORT FROM FLETCHER HANKS PANEL
Posted at 6:50 PM by gormuu
Per NEWSARAMA, a report on the panel covering the quirky career of Fletcher Hanks, creator of the oddball Golden Age world of Stardust and Phantoma, recently reprinted in Fantagraphics' I SHALL DESTROY ALL CIVILIZED PLANETS. This collection sold out almost immediately, so I'd highly recommend trying to snag one of the last secondhand copies available through AMAZON before they are gone.
Book editor Paul Karasik suggested that there may be another Fletcher Hanks collection of stories to follow up I Shall Destroy All Civilized Planets.
SDCC: IDW COLLECTION PLANS
Posted at 6:00 PM by gormuu

NEWS UPDATE: 7/26THE TWELVE: READING THE TEA LEAVES ON GA MASTERWORKS
Posted at 10:50 PM by gormuu
CBR has an interesting INTERVIEW with Marvel editor Tom Brevoort about the upcoming twelve-issue limited series by writer J. Michael Straczynski and artist Chris Weston, appropriately titled The Twelve, that dusts off some of the most obscure Timely characters of all time:
"As readers may have guessed, the title "The Twelve" refers to the cast of characters in the series. "Every single one of the characters who make up the Twelve is a pre-existing actual 1940s Timely Comics character--though most of them appeared in only a few scattered stories back in the Golden Age," Brevoort explained. The twelve characters are Captain Wonder, Dynamic Man, Electro the Marvel of the Age, Rockman, Mister E, Mastermind Excello, the Blue Blade, the Phantom Reporter, the Laughing Mask, the Witness, the Fiery Mask, and the Golden Age Black Widow."
Read the interview for the full scoop on the new series, which is scheduled to bow in January '08, but since most of these characters hail from such titles as Daring Mystery and Mystic Comics, perhaps we have moved that much closer to seeing those oddball anthologies represented in GA Masterworks?

SDCC: MATT WAGNER ON GRENDEL REPRINTS
Posted at 7:20 PM by gormuu
Newsarama covered the SDCC's Grendel panel featuring Matt Wagner. He discussed his feelings about the work covered in the recent GRENDEL ARCHIVE HC, and there was also news about Grendel plans for the coming year:
"Wagner pointed out Grendel Archives, which collected and reprinted for the first time the original Hunter Rose stories from Comico Primer. Again addressing the rumors that Wagner never sought to reprint the material prior to this because he was embarrassed by it, the creator said that he's fully accepted that it was his older world, and he was no more ashamed of it as he would be ashamed that he was once seven years old.....
More Grendel projects are coming, both Wagner and Schutz added, which will include collections of Batman/Grendel (both in trade and hardcover format) before the end of the year, collections of God and the Devil, Devil's Quest (slim hardcover) and Devil's Reign...."

SDCC: HEROES LANDS AT DC, ONLINE COMICS COLLECTED
Posted at 2:30 PM by gormuu
More from Newsarama's Chris Arrant: "Yesterday, Newsarama.com got the story of DC Comics lining up to publish a collected edition of the Heroes comic book material which had been presented on NBC.com. To date, there have been 43 different stories with art by a variety of artistic heavyweights, and industry speculation that it was only a matter of time before someone picked up the publishing rights.
DC will be publishing this under their Wildstorm imprint, which has recently become the de-facto home for DC's licensed comic titles as the publisher expands into that area."

For news entries from the SDCC, I'll pull out info related to collected editions news with a link that cites the original article. There's going to be TONS of news coming out of San Diego, and I'll be doing my best to cull all the collected editions news out for you.

NEWS UPDATE: 7/19SHIPPING NEXT WEEK FROM TALES OF WONDER
Posted at 10:50 AM by gormuu
Here's the list of books you might be interested in that began shipping yesterday from Tales of Wonder, on Wednesday, July 18.
There's an eclectic mix of stuff coming out this week, with no one publisher cornering the market on cool releases! But there is one publisher who has literally the biggest release, and that's Image's Madman Gargantua HC, the "Absolute"-style hardcover release of Mike Allred's Madman. It reprints Madman #1-3, Madman Adventures #1-3, Madman Comics #1-20, Madman Super King-Size Groovy Special and more. (Please note, as discussed in THIS THREAD, the contents do not include the Madman crossover with DC's Superman.) This book has been plagued with delays. It was originally due to ship in February, but got pushed back and pushed back and finally it sees the light of day in July. (Also note, the Signed and Numbered variant has been allocated. You may have already found out that your preordered copy is not available.)
Also from Image comes another in Joe Casey and Tom Scioli's Kirby-esque Godland series, with Godland Vol. 3: Proto Plastic Party TPB, which reprints Godland #13-18.
Jeff Smith issues another of his Bone series, with the simultaneous release of Bone Vol. 6: Old Man's Cave in color HC and TPB.
Dark Horse delivers Harvey Comics Classics Vol. 1: Casper the Friendly Ghost TPB, a "best of" compilation that features material culled from 1952 to the mid-60s, in both black and white and color. Also, the sixth volume in their Star Wars anniversary HC collection sees the light of day, with Star Wars 30th Anniversary Collection Vol. 6: Endgame HC.
One of the first collected editions offered by the new Virgin imprint that I can recall is John Woo's Seven Brothers Vol. 1 HC, a graphic novel written by Garth Ennis and based on Woo's story, it is limited to 2500 copies.
Marvel offers up a rarity in their Marvel Premiere Edition HC format with The Hood: Blood Into Stones MPE HC, which reprints the six-issue series by Brian K. Vaughan and Kyle Hotz. This title was reprinted previously in TPB, but quickly went out of print and laid forgotten until Brian Michael Bendis announced plans to update the Hood in the pages of New Avengers. This MPE HC will help fill in the gaps for readers who want to know about the character's backstory.
Finally, DC delivers a couple collections that classic comics fans will want to take note of: Seven Soldiers of Victory Archives Vol. 2, which reprints some ultra-rare comics from Leading Comics #5-8, featuring Green Arrow, the Shining Knight, the Vigilante and more, and The Original Encyclopedia of Comic Book Heroes Vol. 2: Wonder Woman, a reprint of the 1976 information compendium written by Michael Fleisher.

Devil Dinosaur by Jack Kirby Omnibus HC Reprints Devil Dinosaur #1-9!
|
Here's the list of books you might be interested in that begin shipping next week from Tales of Wonder, on Wednesday, July 11.
Marvel's slate of HCs leads this week with a most irregular Omnibus! Checking in at less than 200 pages, Devil Dinosaur by Jack Kirby Omnibus will be the smallest volume with the Omnibus tag yet! But Jack's late '70s Marvel creation was larger than life, and this is a book especially geared for kids, so you might want to check it out if you're not familiar with the series. To that end, check out the special PREVIEW PAGE linked above.
There are two other Marvel HCs on the release schedule this week, both Marvel Premiere Editions: Nextwave Vol. 2: I Kick Your Face HC, which reprints the final six issues of Warren Ellis and Stuart Immonen's hyper-irreverent take on super-hero team books (Nextwave: Agents of H.A.T.E. #7-12); and X-Men - Phoenix: Warsong, which reprints the five-issue limited series by Greg Pak and Tyler Kirkham (with covers by Marc Silvestri). This series is a sequel to last year's Phoenix: Endsong.
More classic material from Marvel, but in trade paperback, comes in the form of Hulk Visionaries: Peter David Vol. 4 TPB, which is a hefty 232-page color trade that reprints Incredible Hulk #355-363, featuring more outstanding Jeff Purves art, and the Hulk stories from Marvel Comics Presents #26 and 45.
And for more Peter David, keep your eye on IDW's Fallen Angel: The Premiere Collection HC, which reprints the first thirteen issues of PAD's cult favorite series which has had quite an interesting publication, starting out at DC before shifting over to IDW. This edition will reportedly be an oversized hardcover full of extras, and it is priced accordingly!
Another interesting item, and one very much looked forward to by yours truly, is Jack Kirby's Silver Star HC, from Image. It reprints Silver Star #1-6, Jack's last fully realized book of his own invention, published by Pacific Comics in the early '80s on the heels of Captain Victory. This is very strange stuff, and if you like Kirby at his most wacked out, you might want to take a close look at this one!
Finally, it's time for that twice monthly observance of another new Showcase Presents volume! This time around, it's Showcase Presents Batgirl Vol. 1, a 552-page black and white phonebook full of Batgirl stories from Batman, Detective and more!

DC: "EARLY REVIEWS PRAISE JACK KIRBY'S FOURTH WORLD OMNIBUS VOL. 1 HC"
Posted at 5:20 PM by gormuu
A recent DC press release offers the following praise for the first volume of the Fourth World Omnibus from some leading publications:
"DC is bringing back the entire Kirby saga . . . in several big, beautiful hardcover editions with all the rich colors of the originals. The work presented here shows why Kirby . . . deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Will Eisner, say, or Alan Moore and Frank Miller. Future generations will come to see Kirby as an exciting myth-maker whose message was life-affirming." - LOS ANGELES TIMES
"Beautifully reproduced, this first of four Fourth World volumes features . . . some of Kirby's most innovative, personal work executed with spectacular imagery. The wow factor is high. Grant Morrison's awestruck introduction explains why Kirby is called The King and why Fourth World is his masterpiece . . . Kirby imagined these stories someday would be collected in hardcover, in publication order, on quality paper - 35 years later, this visionary's dream has become reality. Hail to The King!" - LIBRARY JOURNAL
"Even if you've never read a comic book, you can't escape this four-color Wagnerian's gravitational pull . . . The Forever People, Mister Miracle - Super Escape Artist, and - "King" Kirby never lacked ambition - The New Gods feature kinetic page layouts in which dynamically foreshortened antagonists hurl each other across galaxies, networks of steel divide the panels, Day-Glo pinks enliven hippie-inspired costumes, and coarse-screened collages chart multidimensional byways . . . Kirby's gangly optimism provides the only god we truly need - unfettered imagination." - VILLAGE VOICE
"Buy JACK KIRBY'S FOURTH WORLD OMNIBUS VOL. 1, newly published by DC in glorious color. It will blow your . . . mind." - BOSTON GLOBE

NEWS UPDATE: 6/3MAJOR MASTERWORKS/OMNIBUS NEWS: BTP COMING SOON
Posted at 11:00 PM by gormuu
It was announced by Marvel's Vice President of Sales David Gabriel on our message board forums today that Marvel will be going back to press (BTP) on the following out-of-print Omnibus HCs:
• Fantastic Four Omnibus Vol. 1
• Uncanny X-Men Omnibus Vol. 1
• Amazing Spider-Man Omnibus Vol. 1
Yes, Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 1 is now out of stock at Diamond, only a few short weeks after release. Furthermore, David warns that FF Omnibus Vol. 2 is likely to ship with strong reorders that may cause it to go swiftly OOP as well, so in order to guarantee a copy, perhaps you might want to check in with your retailer of choice and see if they will reserve your copy. (As always, check out site sponsor TOW for FF Omnibus Vol. 2, where they have the REGULAR edition still linked for sale. The variant edition seems to have been taken off their site.)
According to David, the three Omnibus volumes should be once more available for order by November. I'll update this news when official solicits hit.
Also, David mentioned that Masterworks fans aren't going to be left out in the cold on BTP, with some new reprints of old, OOP volumes to appear as soon as September solicits. What those titles are, how extensive the BTP plan will be, and other details is unknown at this time. As usual, stay tuned to MarvelMasterworks.com and the board forums for the most current news on comics collected editions.

NOW THAT'S A VARIANT COVER!
Posted at 7:50 PM by gormuu
You may know forum member Revive The Red Raven mostly from his presidency of the esteemed Red Raven Revival Society! But he's got another claim to fame as owner of one of the perhaps most rare Masterworks ever. And I say "perhaps" because we still don't know the full extent to which this Masterworks was produced, if it was an error copy (likely) or perhaps even some kind of counterfeit (unlikely), or how many such editions exist!
First off, RRR tells me that he bought this edition of Avengers Masterworks Vol. 1, one of the original 27 that reprinted Avengers #1-10, but instead of a dustjacket that reproduced the cover to Avengers #1 inside the foil frame, it contained the following cover image:
....which, as you can tell, ain't Avengers #1! No, it's a poorly colored version of the cover to Iron Man's first appearance in Tales of Suspense #39. A "Marvel Masterwork" to be sure, but one that wouldn't see canonization in the Masterworks library until four years after Avengers Vol. 1. In doing some research, RRR found that this oddity was mentioned in an old issue of the Comics Buyer's Guide. Inquiries to Marvel about this edition were inconclusive.
So at this point, we're doing an information outreach: does anyone else have a copy of Avengers Masterworks Vol. 1 that resembles this? Does anyone remember the CBG article that may have discussed this? If you have any information about this, email me at gormuu@cox.net and let me know. Also, you can visit the Marvel Forum where we'll have a DISCUSSION THREAD open about this topic. Help uncover the secret of this oddity in Masterworks history!

It's a big volume week this week, with ten different collected editions by Marvel seeing release. First and foremost is Hulk Masterworks Vol. 4, which reprints Incredible Hulk #103-110 and Annual #1, and features the first Hulk art turned in by legendary Hulk artist Herb Trimpe!
Other hardcovers include Runaways Vol. 3 HC, which had been delayed a few week's but finally sees release. This oversized HC covers Runaways #13-24 by Brian K. Vaughan, Adrian Alphona and Mike Norton. The second MPE HC for X-Factor comes our way with X-Factor: The Many Lives of Madrox HC, which reprints X-Factor #13-17 by Peter David and Pablo Raimondi. And two Marvel/Dabel Brothers HCs finally see print after lengthy delays: Magician Apprentice Vol. 1 HC and Orson Scott Card's Red Prophet: Tales of Alvin Maker Vol. 1 HC.
Marvel tradepaperbacks of note include Amazing Spider-Girl Vol. 1 TPB, the first non-digest reprints of Mayday Parker in over siz years! And two Civil War trades hit store shelves: Civil War: War Crimes TPB, which collects the excellent War Crimes one-shot with the non-CW five-issue limited series Underworld by Frank Tieri. Also, look for Civil War: X-Men Universe TPB, which rounds up X-Factor #8-9 and Cable & Deadpool #30-32.
DC isn't releasing the quantity of books that Marvel is this week, but they do have quality! Two stellar Batman books hit stands this Wednesday: Batman Black and White Vol. 3 HC, another collection of b&w Batman stories by folks like Brian Azzarello, Darwyn Cooke, Mike Kaluta and more! Also, Batman Chronicles Vol. 3 TPB, the third installment in DC's series of affordable color trades which recount the early years of Batman in chronological order! This TPB collects Detective Comics #46-50, Batman #4-5 and more!
Another Showcase Presents volume speeds its way to your collection, and it's a key one! Showcase Presents The Flash Vol. 1 recounts the adventures of the Silver Age's Flash, Barry Allen! And for some classic Vertigo, check out Hellblazer: The Devil You Know TPB, which reaches all the way back to 1988 to reprint Hellblazer #10-13, Annual #1 and The Horrorist #1-2 by Jamie Delano, Mark Buckingham, David Lloyd and others.

NEWS UPDATE: 5/8FANTASTIC FOUR OMNIBUS VOL. 2 PREVIEW PAGE LIVE!
Posted at 11:40 PM by gormuu
Click the following link to access the preview page for the FANTASTIC FOUR OMNIBUS VOL. 2, which contains an exclusive advance look at the final versions of both the regular and variant covers for the book, as well as detailed contents listings for the bonus materials and a plethora of page art from the inside of the book! If you're curious about what this doorstopper of a book is going to look like, this preview page should satisfy!
Now, about that variant cover by Ladronn, it's one of my favorite pieces of art I've seen in a long time. In keeping with previous Omnibus editions of Masterworks material, the regular cover features original cover art from the period being reprinted, while the variant features a painted "remake" of that same cover. In this case, artist Ladronn has painted the cover to the classic Kirby cover to FF #49, and it's gorgeous! But don't take my word for it:

A HANDFUL OF DC DELAYS TO NOTE
Posted at 11:45 AM by gormuu
DC has been pretty good at keeping things on schedule lately, but a couple editions have been pushed back from the original solicit dates. Be aware that Neil Gaiman and Charles Vess' Stardust HC moves from May 2 to its new ship date of May 16. Also, Hellblazer: The Devil You Know TPB is pushed back a single week, from May 9 to May 16. Finally, though not listed in their formal list of schedule changes, Superman/Batman Vol. 5: The Enemies Among Us HC seeems to have slipped from its initial May 7 ship date to a new ship date of June 20.
SPEAKING OF DELAYS: MADMAN GARGANTUA
Posted at 11:45 AM by gormuu
Yet another delay on Mike Allred's eagerly awaited Absolute-style HC reprint of his complete run of Madman, Madman Gargantua Seems we'll have to wait even longer for this massive tome to hit our bookshelves. According to Mike, who posted on his message board, a long wait has gotten just a little bit longer:
So, bad news first. Well, for me it's good news actually, because at least now I know. The lost film snafu threw the GARGANTUA schedule off big time. But we now have some fairly concrete dates as long as nothing else drops through the cracks. If all goes well we're looking at it hitting shelves in late July/Early August. Of course I want that huge baby in my hands right now, but we're only at the end of the second trimester. I can tell you we've signed the signature plates and have proofed most of the design elements and so far so great. Sorry for the lateness and thanks for your patience ...
(Hat tip to M Yo!)
JACK KIRBY'S SILVER STAR HC OFFICIALLY SOLICITED
Posted at 11:45 AM by gormuu
Thanks to Rob Anderton for spotting this in Image's July solicits and POSTING about it at the Crisis Off-Topic board forum! As first reported on this website, Silver Star is on its way (to be followed at some point by Captain Victory!)
JACK "KING" KIRBY'S SILVER STAR is collected in an oversized full color hardcover at last! Chronicling the rise of Homo-Geneticus, a genetically altered Breed of humanity, designed to survive an impending apocalypse, which spawns both the heroic Silver Star and the sadistic Darius Drumm! SILVER STAR is a surreal masterpiece! Insightful, thought-provoking, uproarious, frantic and deadly! SILVER STAR was Kirby's final creation, originally published by Pacific Comics in the early '80s. It's a huge, sweeping epic, filled with classic Kirby trademarks: crackling energy, memorable characters, outrageous dialogue, explosive action and ham-fisted romance!
